International students and PhD candidates have just a few days left to apply for the Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarship in Germany.
The Heinrich Böll Foundation is currently accepting applications for its Fall 2026 scholarship round, with the application deadline set for 1 September 2026.
The opportunity is open to eligible international students who have completed their first degree abroad and are preparing to start a Master’s degree in Germany, as well as international PhD candidates who have completed their graduate degree abroad and intend to pursue a PhD in Germany.
The Foundation gives priority to international applicants from DAC countries who have not yet taken up residence in Germany at the time of application.
What Does the Scholarship Offer?
For eligible international Master’s students, the scholarship provides a basic monthly award of €992, with additional financial support potentially available depending on the applicant’s circumstances. This can include support such as tuition-fee reimbursement and other allowances.
For eligible international PhD candidates, the Foundation’s current financial-support information lists a basic scholarship of €1,500 per month, with additional allowances potentially available depending on the applicant’s circumstances.
Important Requirement for International Applicants
Applicants should carefully review the Foundation’s requirements before applying.
International applicants are required to demonstrate German-language proficiency at B2 or DSH II level. This requirement applies even when the intended degree programme is taught in English.
Applicants are also assessed on factors including academic performance, civic engagement and political interest. Meeting the formal eligibility requirements does not guarantee that an applicant will receive the scholarship.
